 LONG DESCRIPTION

Addressing SUD/COD Challenges

According to annual studies by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA), nearly 8% or over 20 million adults in the U.S. experienced a substance use disorder (SUD) in the past year. Alcohol and cannabis use disorders are the most common SUDs although people have opioid, stimulant or other drug use disorders. Some individuals have more than one SUD.

SUDs vary in severity from mild to severe. These can cause or worsen health or mental health problems, family relationships and ability to function. Drug use disorders are associated with high rates of drug overdose, HIV infections, and hepatitis. Any of these can harm health and affect longevity and quality of life.

These disorders also affect families and intimate relationships, causing emotional distress, anxiety and worry. Families face increased risk of breakup, domestic violence, child abuse or neglect, or financial instability. Children of parents with a SUD are at increased risk for substance use, psychiatric, medical, behavioral and academic problems. SUDs affect large number of individuals and family members including young children.

Many individuals with a SUD also have a co-existing psychiatric disorder (COD). Individuals with CODs are at higher risk than those with a single type of disorder for poor adherence to treatment, suicidality, instability, family chaos, relapse, and rehospitalization.

Only 10-15% of those with a SUD get help. Failure to address a SUD can reduce the lifespan, harm functioning and the quality of life of the substance user AND family.

SUD/COD Treatment and the Recovery Toolkits

A recent population health study by the Harvard Research Recovery Institute found that over 9% or 22 million individuals who had SUDs no longer have a substance problem. Many paths to recovery are used. Clinical trials and surveys show that engaging in treatment, mutual aid or both leads to improvement in functioning for those with SUDs and family members.

Information about SUDs, treatment and recovery is one proven, effective strategy that helps individuals and families better understand how to identify, engage in recovery, and learn to manage these disorders. Hope replaces despair and positive coping replaces negative behaviors. Our recovery toolkits engage the individual in learning information and using active coping strategies to manage SUDs or CODs. The practical materials also provide strategies for including the family in treatment and or recovery.

Toolkit Audiences

The primary audience for our toolkits is the person with a SUD. Interactive recovery materials supplement counseling sessions or recovery group sessions led by professionals or peers who are in recovery from SUDs. These materials are used in many addiction, psychiatric, medical, and criminal justice systems in the U.S. and other countries. Several of my recovery publications have been translated to Spanish, Vietnamese, Swedish, Slovakian, Norwegian and Chinese. Surveys of hundreds of clients in treatment show that these materials are rated as very helping in learning information and recovery coping strategies. Surveys of professionals also show that these materials help support clinical work across the continuum of care.

Framework, Content, and Structure of Toolkits

Each substance-related toolkit uses a similar template to provide information, interactive activities to raise self awareness, stories and quotes from others in recovery to inspire and motivate, and suggested coping strategies to manage the challenges of recovery.

Information and recovery activities in toolkits integrate research, clinical and self-help literature, and extensive clinical experience of the author. Each toolkit involves several interactive guides along with a goal planning worksheet to help address the common challenges in early and middle recovery

The substance-related disorders toolkits include most of the same materials. These provide the user with a portfolio of materials that address the challenges of recovery. Some can be used in early recovery, others in middle or later recovery. A family guide is included in all of the substance toolkits since families are harmed by SUDs and often benefit from treatment and/or mutual aid programs. All materials are printed in size 12 font, and on 8 ½ x 11 paper for ease of answering questions. Most sections are brief.
