Description

By Robin Casarjian and The Lionheart Foundation

#9721   Used in conjunction with the popular book Houses of Healing (#6378), the new. (2020) Making Time Count self-study workbook leads participants through the nationally recognized Houses of Healing Program (#6380) using clear, easy-to-follow instructions, exercises, and activities. This powerful self-examination and renewal resource covers everything from forgiveness, meditation, emotions, anger, and resentment to childhood trauma, grief, guilt, dignity, and moving on. The restricted movement in prisons and jails caused by the COVID pandemic has increased the need for high-quality programming that can take place regardless of individuals’ mobility. The Making Time Count self-study workbook provides access to proven and effective programming to anyone with a modest reading level, a pen, and a willingness to engage in powerful rehabilitation programming.

Until recently, the Houses of Healing Program was largely delivered through groups using the Houses of Healing Facilitator Manual (#6381) conducted by staff, volunteers, and in some cases, incarcerated individuals. The new Making Time Count self-study workbook significantly increases the number of people with access to this life-changing program, allowing individuals with restricted movement to receive the same high-impact programming without relying on the presence of Houses of Healing groups.

Ways to Use Making Time Count (MTC)

  1. Self-study: MTC can be used as a self-study course. With this workbook, the Houses of Healing  book, the ability to read at a 5th grade reading level, and a pen or pencil, participants have everything they need to move forward.
  2. Groups: MTC can also be used in groups with participants doing the “self-work” on their own between classes. Participants can discuss the concepts, practice the relaxation and meditation exercises together, and share and discuss the completed worksheets. (If available, the Houses of Healing Educational and Training Video Series can add to the power of the program.) MTC can be engaged in more informally by working through the workbook with one or two other people – whether it is a cellmate, someone else inside, or even by mail with a mentor, friend or family member.
  3. One-on-one: MTC can also be a focal point for individual work with a counselor or chaplain.
  4. Augment Other Programs: MTC can augment existing groups focused on recovery, violence prevention, victim awareness, re-entry, or other programs geared to emotional growth and healing.

What Participants Are Saying About Making Time Count

“….I could not see myself making the progress I have made without this self-study course. It was as if I was sinking in hatred and resentful quicksand that was stripping me of my humanity, health, and peace but someone reached out and I was willing to accept the helping hand.”  Michael

“….I know this program helped all the guys I talked to about it. It distills a lot of the most important psychological and spiritual truths for helping anyone succeed in life but especially someone going through the difficult challenge of incarceration.”   Brad

“….This course has greatly impacted my life in a positive way. I’ve taken several self-help courses. I’ve been in solitary confinement for more than 15 years, but this course was unlike any other and made me look deeper into myself.” Jameik

“….How has Making Time Count impacted me? Hugely…. It has shown me a new way to doing time. It allowed me to really become aware of a lot of emotions within myself that I never really cared or knew how to explore before. I find myself at peace now and able to deal with hardship better than ever before.” Crystal
