DO WHAT YOU LOVE
By Ann Coil
People will say you can't...
be a middle-aged woman with little work experience and become an assistant to
a directory in the film industry. But Janet did.
be a third grade school teacher and become an instructional designer for a major fast
food company. But John did.
be a chemical engineer in an environmental company and enter the field of public
affairs with a lobbyist in Sacramento. But Marlene did.
These successful career changers did two important things:
- They held on to their dreams.
- And they didn't listen to the nay-sayers.
Are you restless? Is there something you know you need to do or
accomplish?
Marsha Sinetar, in her book, Do What You Love and the Money Will Follow, says
that any strong interest or passion we have, if ignored, will eventually surface as
a need.
Just do it! Don't let the din and clatter of daily life numb you and steal
your dreams and goals! Get in touch with what you love and want to do. It IS achievable!
It is rarely a question of "Can you do it?" It's a matter of the time and energy
it will take to do it and your willingness and determination to stick with it till you
succeed
How to do it?
- Take some quiet time and contemplate what you really enjoy doing.
- Think about how you played as a child. What did you love to do?
- Ask yourself, "How do I want to impact the world I touch through my work?"
- Find a confidant and discuss your career goals, needs, and preferences.
- Read career books, take classes, or see a career coach to help you sort through and
clarify your thoughts, goals, dreams, passion, and develop a plan.
Last week a client said to me, "I've always wanted to help people caught in disasters,
and work with animals who help rescue them." I replied, "So, do it!" And we are now hot
on the trail of making that happen for her.
