The goal of this evidence-based curriculum is to educate children in elementary school about the risks of alcohol and other drug use.

Protecting You Protecting Me (curriculum for Grades 1-5)

Protecting You Protecting Me (curriculum for Grades 1-5)

Since children are at increasing risk for alcohol and other drug use as they grow older, it is imperative that educators reach them during elementary school - grades 1-5 - before they have shaped their attitudes and opinions about drug use.
This evidence-based curriculum incorporates the latest research on children's brains and developmental risks associated with exposure to alcohol before age 21.
The curriculum for each grade addresses eight topics:

  1. The brain
  2. Growth and development
  3. Health and safety
  4. Rules and laws
  5. Friends
  6. Choices and decisions
  7. Media awareness
  8. Communication (especially with adults)
Lessons are taught in sequence, with the same topics repeated for each grade level with increasing sophistication paralleling cognitive and social development.
The lessons are designed to be incorporated into the core school curriculum. The program also includes parental involvement activities.
Program materials for each grade include a 3-ring binder with a curriculum, a fidelity checklist, a scope-and-sequence document, and parent materials in English and Spanish. 2006. $139.00 for each grade, or $695.00 for all five curricula.
Additional materials that are included in the curriculum for each grade are as follows:
  • Grade 1: 3 storybooks and 7 color posters
  • Grade 2: 1 poster
  • Grade 3: 2 posters
  • Grade 4: 3 posters
  • Grade 5: Protecting Our Brain DVD and 1 poster
The curriculum is also available in Spanish or for Native Americans. If you want one of these two versions, please call our toll-free number: 800-361-1055, Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 5 PM EST, to order.
