EXCERPT FROM CHAPTER 1: WRITING YOUR BEST COVER LETTER
Over the past decade, as the U.S. economy has undergone dramatic and long-lasting changes, the business world has globalized and the employment market become more competitive, the job search process has evolved into a much more complex and more sophisticated process. Remember the days when you could type a brief resume of your work history and educational background, submit a few copies to friends, and in response to advertisements, go on a few interviews, and accept a new offer, all within a few weeks? Well, forget those days, for they are long since gone! The times have changed, the employment market has changed, and the competition for top-flight opportunities has increased at an unprecedented rate.
Showcase Your Talents and Strengths
Step one, and perhaps the most critical step in planning, preparing, and launching a successful job search for a $100,000+ position, involves the writing and design of your portfolio of job search marketing communications. These documents should be written to showcase your talents and strengths, highlight your achievements, and excite prospective employers to extend you the opportunity for an interview.
Without these tools, you can go nowhere in your job search. They are the foundation for everything else that follows - responses to job postings, email campaigns to recruiters, direct mail to companies, Internet postings, networking, and other activities you'll engage in to market yourself into your next position. They are what get you in the door for interviews; they are what you leave behind after the interview as a reminder of who you are and the value you bring to an organization; they are your calling card. These documents are crucial in building your visibility throughout the job search market and ultimately facilitating your success.
To succeed in your job search, there are several different documents that you must include in your portfolio of marketing communications:
- Your Resume (multiple versions if necessary)
- Your Cover Letter (multiple versions if necessary)
- Your Interview Follow-Up Letters (personalized to each company and position)
- Your Networking Letters (customized to each of your colleagues)
This book is devoted to the latter three items - cover letters, interview follow-up letters, and networking letters - along with other special types of letters you may have the opportunity to use in your job search. For detailed information on writing and designing resumes for $100,000+ management and executive opportunities, you can refer to the companion book in this series, Best Resumes for $100,000+ Jobs (Impact Publications, 2001).
Critical Cover Letter Concepts
Over the past decade, the cover letter has undergone a massive transformation. In years past, a cover letter was really just a transmittal letter, a short note indicating you were "transmitting" your resume for review. Today's cover letters are true marketing communications, focusing on your achievements, experience, and credentials as they directly relate to a particular company's or recruiter's needs. They are proactive, designed to market and to sell, not just passively communicate "Here's my resume."
To understand the value of your cover letter to your job search process, it is best to start with a clear definition of what a cover letter is. It is defined as:
- A marketing document that is a "teaser," designed to entice someone to read your resume and extend you the opportunity for a personal interview.
- A tool designed to sell the high points of your career - your successes, achievements, and most notable and relevant qualifications.
- A document that demonstrates the value you bring to a prospective employer.
- A document that is fairly quick to read and easy to peruse.
- A visual presentation that communicates an executive image.
A cover letter is not:
- A transmittal letter that simply states "Enclosed is my resume...May we meet for an interview?"
- A document containing lengthy text and long paragraphs that is slow to read.
- A passive, low-energy, and narrative summary of your work history.
Writing cover letters, just like writing resumes, is a creative process where your challenge is to highlight the "greatest" things about yourself and your career in the least amount of space possible while relating those "great" things to the company's specific needs. No problem! We'll explore this concept in much greater detail in the next chapter. However, to get you started, pay close attention to the following....
